Yankees & Mets Have A Problem: Unvaccinated Players Can't Play in Home Games

Well, who didn't see this one coming? The New York Post is reporting that the New York City vaccine mandate applies to outdoor workplaces as well as indoor. Which means that if nothing changes in city laws between now and April 7th, the Yankees and Mets could be without some key players for Opening Day. And for every home game.

The Mets were among the teams that didn't reach the 85% vaccination threshold in 2021 for relaxed protocols. While the Yankees, according to Insider Jon Heyman, have three unvaccinated players.

The face of the Yankees, Aaron Judge, is apparently among those that will be affected. Judge completely evades the question when asked if he was vaccinated:

I’m so focused on just getting through the first game of spring training. I think we’ll cross that bridge whenever the time comes. But right now, so many things could change. I’m not really too worried about that right now.

As for whether "things could change" before Opening Day, the Yankees are definitely working on it to the best of their ability.

"On behalf of the Yankees, Randy Levine is working with City Hall and all other appropriate officials on this matter. We will have no further comment" is all the team would say, though team officials believe that the city will reverse its decision before Opening Day, a source with knowledge of the situation told Kuty.

As we reported earlier this week, regardless of what happens with NYC rules, unvaccinated players will be unable to cross the border to play in Toronto, something the Yankees will do about 10 times this season.
