Yankees Have Decided On A Shortstop ... For Now

Was this the news Yankees fans have been waiting for? Manager Aaron Boone today announced that his shortstop.. as of now at least.. will be Gio Urshela.

Urshela, who played 26 games at short in 2021, gets the nod, for now. With the occasional sprinkling of Gleyber Torres, adds Boone.

Of course, GM Brian Cashman could still have something to say about that, by signing one of the big-money shortstops on the free agent market, Carlos Correa or Trevor Story. But not a lot of Yankee observers are holding their breath on that.

Cash could also make a move to bring in a stop-gap shortstop to hold the fort until one of their prized prospects, Anthony Volpe or Oswald Peraza are ready for the bigs, hopefully sometime later this season.

"Obviously we’ve got some young guys that are knocking on the door that we’re really excited about," said Boone. "[Oswald] Peraza and [Oswaldo] Cabrera that are here. We’ll just let that situation shake out. I’m sure there’s still things to be done across the game and certainly with us that are going to change that landscape potentially along the way.”

Letting the shortstop situation just "shake out" is not what many Yankees fans wanted to hear at this point, but the transactions frenzy is still in its formative stages, and the season is more than 3 weeks away. Lots could change between now and then.
