White Sox Young Power Hitter Carted Off Field With Injury

It seemed like an innocent enough play, but the Chicago White Sox were holding their breath when right fielder Andrew Vaughn had to be carted off the field after injuring himself diving for a ball.

He got up after the play, and though you can see him favoring the hip, at first he tried to wave off help. But that didn't last long, as he was carted off the field.

He's been diagnosed with right hip discomfort and is undergoing further evaluation. He's day-to-day at this point.

Vaughn is relatively new to right field, as he's a first baseman by trade. But Jose Abreu has been locked in as the ChiSox' 1B for eight years running, and despite his age (35), isn't slowing down much, still knocking 30 HR with 117 RBI last season.

The 24-year-old Vaughn was one of baseball's top prospects heading into 2021, though he struggled a bit in his rookie season, batting .235 with a .705 OPS. And because of Abreu's presence, he spent most of his season playing in the outfield, a spot he hadn't played before. Whether his unfamiliarity with the position was a factor in this injury is hard to say.
