Texas Rangers Sign Lefthanded Starter

Before the lockout, the Texas Rangers spent over half a billion dollars on free agent additions. They're back in spending mode now as business resumes, though not in the same snack bracket. The Rangers have signed an old friend, lefthander Martin Perez to a one-year, $4M deal.

It's not the lefthanded starter many were hoping for in Texas—that would be hometown Dallas native Clayton Kershaw—but it is a familiar face nevertheless.

Perez spent the first seven years of his career in Texas. Now 31 years old, he returns to the team that brought him into the majors.

Perez has a 4.71 ERA over his 10-year career, along with a 1.48 WHIP, numbers very similar to his seven years in Texas.

It's more of a depth piece for the back end of the Rangers' rotation, although he did also make 14 appearances out of the bullpen for the Boston Red Sox last season. He definitely provides some flexibility for the Texas staff.

The team is still looking to add to its rotation; perhaps Kershaw is still on the table.
