MLB Rumors: Trevor Story In Talks With Big-Spending Team

The last big-time shortstop on the free agent market has seen his options dwindle, and his earlier refusal to move off short may have scared off some teams. But one club, already huge spenders on the free agent market this offseason, are apparently willing to take a chance, if Story is.

The Texas Rangers are trying to bring in their 3rd star shortstop of the winter, after spending half a billion dollars earlier on Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. Semien is moving to 2nd base, as he did with the Toronto Blue Jays last season.

The plan for Story, should he accept, would be to move to left field for 2022. In that way, he could re-establish his market value and go back into free agency next winter. He had an off-year in 2021, managing a mere .801 OPS, well down from his career marks.

Another big free agent shortstop batch in 2023

The only drawback with that plan, is that 2023 will be another bang-up year in free agency for shortstops, with the Boston Red Sox' Xander Bogaerts and the Los Angeles Dodgers' Trea Turner expected to be on the market. Story would be 3rd choice once again.

The former Colorado Rockies SS is rumored to have turned down multiple $100M offers already in his refusal to change positions, but it appears he may be changing his tune now as the offers dry up.

The New York Yankees and Houston Astros are other options for Story, if he remains steadfast on sticking to shortstop this season. The San Francisco Giants and Red Sox are also still in the hunt, as Story's story drags on.
