MLB Rumors: Blue Jays Talking Contract With Long-Time Yankee

The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the busiest teams leading up to the 2022 season as they've added some big pieces this offseason. Turns out they may not be finished as the team has interest in long-time New York Yankee outfielder Brett Gardner.

The Blue Jays know Gardner very well from their AL East battles and seeing him anywhere but the Bronx will take some getting used to. The speedy outfielder is a tough out and sits without a contract for this upcoming season. Toronto remains in contact and have begun to discuss some contract specifics with Gardner's camp.

The 38-year-old would be a fourth outfielder for the Blue Jays and likely see some time at DH. He's looking to play in his 15th season and is reportedly willing to play outside of Yankee stadium to do so. There's also been rumblings of a retirement so it certainly sounds like Gardner is in limbo with his tough decisions at the moment.

Last season in New York, Gardner slashed .222/.327/.362 with 10 HR, 39 RBI and four stolen bases, appearing in 140 games. He's a career .256 hitter and can still annoy pitchers with his ability to prolong at bats. Toronto would love to add another left-handed bat so if the talks with Gardner go south, look for the team to continue their search and land another free agent before opening day.
