MLB Rumors: Blue Jays Make Contract Offer to Veteran Infielder

The Toronto Blue Jays have already been busy since the MLB operations restarted and it appears their work is not done. The Blue Jays have a huge hole at third base to fill this season and while Cavan Biggio remains an internal option, it appears the team is trying to acquire some more depth. The team has made a contract offer to free-agent infielder Jonathan Villar.

Villar spent last season with the New York Mets, appearing in 142 games. He hit .249 on the year and smashed 18 HR and drove in 42 runners. While the 30-year-old managed to swipe 14 bags he was caught stealing seven other times and look for him to try and improve this in 2022.

Villar is on the Blue Jays radar because they are very familiar with his game as he was a member of the team back in 2020 after a trade with the Miami Marlins. He can play third, second and shortstop and roster flexibility is something that's a premium for the Blue Jays.

Toronto has been busy rounding out their rotation and adding some options for the bullpen so now it makes sense for the team to turn to infield depth. Villar is certainly one option that's left on the open market and if he decides to move on from the Blue Jays interest expect to see Toronto work the phones as they want to start the season with more depth and lineup versatility.
