MLB Rumors: Atlanta Braves Revisit Matt Olson Trade Talks With A's

While everyone waits on Freddie Freeman's next move, the Atlanta Braves are apparently not waiting at the alter, in case he leaves. They have ramped up discussions with the Oakland A's over star first baseman Matt Olson.

It would be a Plan B for the Braves, but really, more like a Plan A-minus, as Olson is an All-Star 1B himself, and a Gold Glover as well, similar to Freeman. Olson is younger (turning 28 before Opening Day), and, for now, cheaper, at least in salary, as he's under team control for two more years ($12M this season).

And Olson is an Atlanta native. The fit seems almost too good to be true. But it will cost the Braves an expensive prospect haul, if GM Alex Anthopoulos is up for it.

As Insider Jon Morosi reports, it's thought that Freeman will make up his mind before the other top free agent, Carlos Correa. The dominoes should start to fall from there, including this possible Olson trade.

Freeman has spent his entire 12-year career in Atlanta, while Olson has been in Oakland for all of his 6 years in the majors. The A's first baseman had a monster year in 2021, with 39 HR, 111 RBIs and a .911 OPS.
