Kyle Schwarber Is Blockbuster Signing For Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have secured the power bat they were looking for, winning the Kyle Schwarber sweepstakes. It's a big win for the Phils, and should be a huge boon for Schwarber, who'll be blasting bombs at the Citizen Bank bandbox.

The Athletic's Jayson Stark is reporting that it's a 4-year deal, worth just under $80M. The Phillies had pursued Schwarber aggressively before the lockout, and kept up that momentum once business opened in the past week.

The 29-year-old Schwarber had a breakout year in 2021, first with the Washington Nationals, where he set home run records in June, blasting 12 in a 10-game span, and 16 HR over just 77 at-bats. He wrapped up his All-Star season in Boston, with an overall total of 32 HR in just 113 games.

What made Schwarber's run unique, is that he did his damage out of the leadoff spot, and it's possible that the Phillies—who finished 2nd from the bottom in all of baseball getting production out of that spot—would keep him there.

He could play some left field, and DH for the Phils.
