Cubs Sign Veteran Shortstop
The Chicago Cubs have signed Andrelton Simmons to a one-year, $4 million contract.
Before the lockout, Simmons was linked to the New York Yankees, but the 32-year-old shortstop will instead be joining the Cubs.
The 2021 season was not a particularly strong one for Simmons. In 131 games with the Minnesota Twins, he had three home runs, 31 RBIs, and a .223 batting average. This certainly was below expectations for the longtime infielder, but there is reason to believe that he can bounce back in 2022. Keep in mind, he did just sport a .297 batting average with the Los Angeles Angels in 2020.
Simmons comes with a vast amount of experience, and that should make him a good addition to the rebuilding Cubs. In 1,191 career games between the Atlanta Braves, Angels, and Twins, he has 70 home runs, 437 RBIs, and a .265 batting average. With that, he also has four Gold Gloves and six Fielding Bible Awards on his resume.
Nevertheless, the Cubs have their new SS.
