Chicago Cubs Sign Starter
The Chicago Cubs have signed Drew Smyly to a one-year, $5.25 million contract. He also can make up to $2.5 million in incentives.
The Cubs have been one of the busiest teams since the lockout was lifted, and it doesn't seem like that is going to change any time soon. They are certainly getting a good pitcher in Smyly as he has a lot of overall experience and just so happened to win a World Series ring with the Atlanta Braves last season.
In 29 appearances with the Braves last season, he had an 11-4 record, 4.48 ERA, and 117 strikeouts. Overall, it's fair to say that he was effective, and he should be a solid addition to the middle of the Cubs' rotation from here.
In 217 career games between the Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, and Braves, Smyly has a 46-39 record and 4.18 ERA. Now he will be building on these totals with his seventh major league club in the Cubs.
