Astros Cheating Scandal Whistleblower Heads to Mexico To Continue Career
Best known for being the player to blow the whistle on the Houston Astros' sign-stealing cheating scandal, former Astro and Oakland A's right-hander Mike Fiers is headed to the Mexican League to resume his career.
Fiers is 36 now, and spent the last 3 1/2 seasons with the A's, though injuries ravaged his 2021 season. Still, he managed a 26-11 record in his run with Oakland, with a 4.12 ERA.
It was in 2019, two years after he had spent a few seasons as an Astro, watching them put together their illegal sign-stealing methods, that he dropped the news on just what they were up to during their 2017 World Series run.

An investigation ensued, and the whole trash-can banging, electronic sign-stealing scandal became the biggest news in baseball. Commissioner Rob Manfred, to the dismay of every baseball follower and player not residing in Houston, refused to levy any penalties on the players, though the Astros' manager and general manager lost their jobs.
Fiers spent 11 years in the majors, and now takes his talents to los Leones de Yucatan of the Mexican League.
