Anibal Sanchez Receives Contract Offer After Showcase For Teams

He hasn't pitched in the majors in two years, but 38-year-old Anibal Sanchez wants back in. Today he held a showcase tryout for several MLB teams in Miami. And it apparently went so well he received an offer already, according to MLB Insider Jon Heyman.

One team that was known to have attended was Sanchez' last major league team, the Washington Nationals. It was a rough 2020 season in DC for the then-36-year-old, as he struggled to a 6.62 ERA. But his two previous seasons were actually very solid.

In 2019, Sanchez went 11-8 for the World Series champion Nationals, with a 3.85 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. In 2018, with the Atlanta Braves, he was even better, working to a 2.85 ERA along with a 1.08 WHIP.

According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the two years away from the game seems to have served him well. Speier wrote a month ago that Sanchez “felt rejuvenated after the time off, throwing with what appears to be more velocity than in recent years.”

The righthander spent 15 years in the big leagues, the first 6 1/2 spent with the Miami Marlins, where he had the most success, aside from the one strong year in Atlanta.

It's not known what other teams attended his showcase on Saturday, but it sounds like Sanchez could be back in the majors for 2022 at the age of 38.
