"A Really Close Experience to Death": Mets' Pete Alonso In "Brutal" Car Accident

Not exactly the type of news you want to hear from your clean-up hitter on the first day of spring training. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso says he was in a "brutal" car accident yesterday and had "a really close experience to death". The good news is that he actually escaped unscathed.

Alonso says he was T-boned by a car that ran a red light, and his car "flipped over about three times." He had to kick his windshield out to get out of his overturned car.

"Thankful to be alive"

"To me, I'm just really thankful to be alive, really thankful that I'm healthy... Very thankful to be here. Anything can happen at any moment... I'm just blessed. "He said that everyone else in his car, and his family, are all OK."

He added that he was able to take ground balls already today, and he's good to go.

He elaborated on the heroic actions his wife took, who was riding in the car behind his.

"She was behind me... rushed out of the car... she alerted the authorities immediately, and corralled people to help."

A frightening start to spring training for the Mets and Alonso, but all is good, and Alonso confirms that he is OK."
