White Sox Sign Outfielder
The Chicago White Sox have signed Dwight Smith Jr. to a minor league contract.
Smith will be looking to get himself back into the majors. After being designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles in 2020, he has not returned since. He spent last season with Triple-A Louisville but was unable to make the Cincinnati Reds' major league roster. In 36 games with the team, he had one home run, 17 RBIs, and a .221 batting average. With, he would be released by the team in June.
There is some reason to believe that Smith could rebound and fight his way to spot on the White Sox. In 2019 with the Orioles, he had 13 home runs, 53 RBIs, and a .241 batting average in 101 games. Although he wasn't dominant, he did show that he could be an extra outfielder at the major league level. In 169 career games between the Toronto Blue Jays and Orioles, he had 17 home runs, 68 RBIs, and a .248 batting average.
It will be interesting to see if Smith can secure himself a spot on the White Sox.
