White Sox Sign 2 Players
The White Sox have signed pitcher Wes Benjamin and outfielder Patrick Kivlehan to minor league deals.
Both of these players spent time in the majors last season but were let go by their teams before it was completed. As a result of this, they were permitted to sign minor league contracts even with the lockout going on.
Benjamin made appearances in each of the last two seasons with the Texas Rangers. In 21 games, he had a 2-3 record, 6.80 ERA, and 40 strikeouts. The 28-year-old has experience as a reliever and starter, so he can provide help for the White Sox in more than one way. Although he has had his struggles at the major league level, perhaps a change of scenery could be just what the doctor ordered for him. At worst, the White Sox have just added to their pitching depth with this signing.
Kivlehan has a decent chunk of major league experience but most of it came during the 2017 season with the Cincinnati Reds. In 137 career games between the Reds, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Diego Padres, he has 10 home runs, 30 RBIs, and a .208 batting average. He could be a solid depth option for them, as he also can play first base if needed.
