Twins Sign Former First Overall Pick

The Minnesota Twins have signed Tim Beckham to a minor-league contract.

Beckham is always an interesting player to follow, as he of course was drafted first overall in the 2008 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. However, the 32-year-old infielder has not played in the majors since the 2019 season with the Seattle Mariners. Interestingly, he didn't struggle too significantly that campaign, as he had 15 home runs, 47 RBIs, and a .237 batting average in 88 games. Since then, however, he hasn't been able to get himself back in the sport's most competitive league.

Beckham played 45 games last season with Triple-A Charlotte, where he had 11 home runs, a .279 batting average, and 32 RBIs. Overall, those numbers weren't bad at all and one has to wonder if he could claw himself back into the majors with Minnesota. When looking at their current roster, it doesn't seem too out of the question.

Beckham's decent chunk of experience also could help land him a spot in the majors again. In 472 games between the Rays, Baltimore Orioles, and Mariners, he has 63 home runs, 198 RBIs, and a .249 batting average. Although he never blossomed into a superstar, he may have the potential to make a comeback as a utility player. Alas, maybe that will happen in Minnesota.
