Red Sox Sign Former Gold Glove Infielder

While the lockout continues, teams are going about the business that they can: signing players to minor league contracts. The Red Sox have inked former Chicago White Sox Gold Glove second baseman Yolmer Sanchez to a minor league deal, with an invite to spring training.

Although he spent 2021 on the Atlanta Braves Triple A roster, Sanchez spent 7 slick-fielding years before that with the Chicago White Sox, winning the Gold Glove at 2B in 2019.

As good as Sanchez is with the glove, his bat leaves a lot to be desired. He holds a career .245 average with very little power, and a .660 OPS.

Competition in the Boston infield

In the Red Sox system, he'll be competing with other utility-type players like Christian Arroyo and Jonathan Arauz for a backup infield utility role. And that's not even taking into account the fact that super utilityman Kike Hernadez is also a mainstay now for the BoSox.

These aren't huge moves major league teams are able to make at the moment, but until a collective bargaining agreement is signed, and business opens as usual, this is the best we've got.
