New York Mets Sign Veteran Pitcher
The New York Mets have signed Felix Pena to a minor league contract. Because the 32-year-old was released by the Los Angeles Angels this past September, he was able to sign this minor league deal during the lockout.
Pena has made appearances at the major league level in each of the last six seasons. However, the 2021 campaign is one that he would like to forget. In two games, he had a 0-0 record, 37.80 ERA, and two strikeouts. Obviously, he struggled immensely during his two outings, but it's also far too small of a sample size to judge him too harshly. He was a reliable pitcher for them over the three previous seasons, so who's to say he can't be with the Mets?
Pena has the potential to cement himself a spot in the Mets' bullpen for the 2022 season. Considering the fact he has been able to be on a major league roster for several years in a row, he should not be counted out yet. Furthermore, he also can be a starter if needed, so he certainly can be deemed as versatile. This should also help his chances.
In 104 career appearances between the Chicago Cubs and Angels, Pena has a 15-8 record, 4.66 ERA, and 267 strikeouts. Let's see if he's given the chance to build on these numbers with the Mets.
