Nationals Sign Veteran Reliever
The Washington Nationals have signed Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league contract.
Edwards Jr. has made appearances at the major league level in each of the last seven seasons. However, he only pitched in seven games between the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays last season. During them, he struggled, as his 11.12 ERA effectively displays. However, he will now be looking to regroup and make the Nationals' roster from here.
In 206 career games between the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Braves, and Blue Jays, he has a 9-8 record, 3.77 ERA, and 248 strikeouts. During his first handful of seasons with the Cubs, he was a very effective reliever, so one has to wonder if a bounce-back campaign could be in order.
Yet, Edwards Jr. will first have to make Washington's roster out of Spring Training. When looking at how poor their pitching was last season, there's a pretty good chance that he could land himself a job. Time will tell on that front, however.
