MLB Rumors: Veteran Free-Agent Open to Position Change

With hopes of the MLB lockout ending soon free agents are getting ready for a flurry of action as the transactions will be early and often once the league opens up operations. Spring training will basically start a few days after the agreement is in place and one free agent wants to make it known to all teams he's willing to do whatever it takes for another contract, including moving positions.

Tommy Pham told the Tampa Bay Times he's willing to move from the outfield and give first base a shot next season. He's hoping the positional flexibility will increase interest and spark a contract offer or two.

One team to watch here would be the Tampa Bay Rays as a reunion with Pham is certainly in the cards considering their interest in finding a right-handed solution at first base. The 33-year-old native of Las Vegas spent 2021 with the San Diego Padres and went through some inconsistencies throughout the year. He finished the season with a .229 average and smacked 15 HR and drove in 49 runs while swiping 14 bags. Pham brings a lot to the table with his speed and power and adding another position or two on the defensive side of the ball will go a long way.

While Tampa Bay is certainly interested, they won't be the only ones. The Toronto Blue Jays are another team to watch in the Pham sweepstakes, along with the Atlanta Braves. Expect to see a one-year 'show-us' contract coming his way with the hopes of a strong season leading to a multi-year contract extension. All Pham wants to do is play baseball, regardless of the position and where he hits in the batting order.
