MLB Rumors: NY Mets Will Be In The Freddie Freeman Chase

If free agent Freddie Freeman is looking for a big-money jackpot, perhaps he'll need to look no further than the deep pockets of New York Mets' free-spending owner Steve Cohen. According to ESPN Insider Buster Olney, the Mets did indeed "check in" on Freeman before the lockout.

That was the word from Olney when he appeared on The Michael Kay Show in New York. "One of the teams that checked in on the Freddie Freeman availability before December 2nd were the Mets," reported Olney.

And for billionaire owner Cohen, who has already spent big cash to bring in a flurry of free agents before the shutdown, money is apparently no object.

Cohen will 'spend what I need to spend'

“It’s very interesting," continued Olney. "Because you just talked about Steve Cohen saying ‘You know what, I don’t care what the CBT is, unlike the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers, I’m just going to spend what I need to spend in order to win.’ And if he blows past $300 million it doesn’t matter at this point."

As for Freeman, he is apparently upset that the Braves didn't make him enough of a priority to get a new deal done before business shut down in December. Now, some industry insiders peg his chances at leaving at 60%.

“This was the most interesting thing that I heard. There’s a perception in the industry that Freddie Freeman is not going back to the Braves,” Olney explained.

One thing is for certain, as noted by SNY: "Once the lockout ends, there will be a flurry of moves around the league, and it’s hard to imagine Cohen and the Mets not being involved."
