MLB Rumors: Cubs Targeting Former Longtime First Baseman
According to Bruce Levine of 670 The Score, the Chicago Cubs are considering the possibility of bringing back former first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
Rizzo was just traded by the Cubs during the 2021 season to the New York Yankees. This was understandable at the moment, as Chicago was out of playoff contention and unable to sign Rizzo to an extension before the deadline. Therefore, they were wise to get assets back instead of losing him for nothing. Yet, this doesn't mean they can't make a run for him once the lockout is over.
In 1,308 games over 10 seasons with the Cubs, Rizzo had 242 home runs, 784 RBIs, and a .272 batting average. With that, he of course was a very important piece of their 2016 World Series and a three-time All-Star. He also went on to win several awards, which include four Gold Glove Awards (2016, 2018-20), Platinum Glove Award (2016), Fielding Bible Award (2016), Roberto Clemente Award (2017), and Silver Slugger Award (2016). Needless to say, he had amazing tenure with the Cubs, so it makes sense that they are considering him again.
Once the lockout ends, Rizzo should have plenty of other teams pursuing him, though. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs end up winning the sweepstakes in the end.
