MLB Rumors: 3 Teams That Could Land Free Agent Michael Conforto
Some eyes were raised after Michael Conforto rejected the New York Mets' qualifying offer ($18.9M). He had a poor 2021, and it was thought that he could benefit from a "bet on yourself" high-value 1-year deal. But alas, Conforto's agent is Scott Boras, so that wasn't going to happen. Boras claims that he expects his client to sign a significant multi-year contract.
3 teams have been linked to Conforto before the lockout, and not much has changed to suggest that these three won't pick up where they left off when business resumes. Potential landing spots for the 28-year-old outfielder:
Miami Marlins
This is a team that had discussions with the Conforto camp before the shutdown, and a team known to still be in the market for outfield improvements, despite their signing of Avisail Garcia to a 4-year, $53M deal.
The Marlins are still in need of a center fielder, and after their efforts to bring back Starling Marte fell through, there are some who feel that Conforto could fit that bill for them.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are on the hunt for two outfielders for 2022, and Conforto has been on the radar. He would slot into left field. The Phils have had some luck recruiting a former Met in free agency, as Zach Wheeler has turned into an ace and Cy Young contender. They'd be hoping to have the same effect on Conforto.
Atlanta Braves
The World Series champs stand to lose a huge chunk of their outfield this offseason, with playoff heroes Jorge Soler, Joc Pederson and Eddie Rosario all free agents. It's unknown if any of them will be back. As well, superstar OF Ronald Acuna Jr. continues his rehab from the torn ACL he suffered in July. Conforto can fill a huge hole in the Atlanta outfield.
