MLB Rumors: 2 Teams Interested in LHP Matthew Boyd

Free-agent southpaw Matthew Boyd underwent flexor tendon surgery last September and from all accounts appears on track to make his comeback efforts in June. He's recently began his throwing program and will be ramping things up as we approach March, with hopes of getting a bullpen session in front of some scouts. The Detroit Tigers opening day starter now hits free agency, let's take a look at two teams who will have some serious interest in the lefthander:

Minnesota Twins

Boyd can't sign at the moment due to lockout restrictions but when time comes look for the Twins to be heavily interested. They have glaring holes on their staff and could fit the southpaw in nicely in a long-relief role with potential to start down the line. Last season Boyd was off to a hot start with a 3.89 ERA in 15 starts for the Detroit Tigers and a lot of his success was due to using his change up more frequently. While his strike outs weren't as high as he'd like, he was able to keep the ball in the ballpark, only giving up 1.03 HR/9. Look for Minnesota to be offering a one or two-year deal.

Los Angeles Angels

The Angels are leaving no stone unturned as they try to refresh the talent on their staff. Boyd would be a low-risk high-reward type of signing and could bring some versatility to their group. He's expected to sign for over $5 million and the Angels won't have any issues meeting the price. While the 31-year-old recorded a 3-8 record last season, his ERA was impressive and he's certainly pitched better throughout his career than his 37-62 record indicates. Frankly the Angels could use just about anyone at the moment and under the radar type of signings, like this one could go a long way for the team getting back to the postseason.
