MLB Rumors: 2 More Free Agent Targets for the New York Mets

The New York Mets were one of the winners of the first half of the offseason, filling several needs with a slew of important signings, including Max Scherzer, Starling Marte, Eduardo Escobar and Mark Canha.

When business resumes, the Mets are said to be still looking to spend, as they are going "all in" for 2022. Two potential targets owner Steve Cohen might look to shell out a bit more cash on:

Nick Castellanos

While Marte and Canha add solid on-base contributors, good defense, and a lot of speed (in Marte's case) to the outfield, the addition of Castellanos would be a significant power upgrade for the Mets.

With 34 home runs and 100 RBIs, and a .939 OPS, the soon-to-be 30-year-old had the best year of his career in 2021 with the Cincinnati Reds, proving once and for all that he is a dominant productive force in the middle of a lineup.

His defense in the outfield? It's certainly nothing to write home about. No problem there, however, as the DH is finally making its home in NL lineups.

Carlos Rodon

Mets GM Billy Eppler has his eye on the former Chicago White Sox hurler, as the best of the remaining free agent arms. And without a lefty currently in the rotation, Rodon fills the bill in a number of ways.

Yes, the 29-year-old had some shoulder problems in the latter part of the season, enough, in fact, to scare off the ChiSox from giving him the Qualifying Offer.

But the high-risk, high-reward of bringing in a left-handed arm of Rodon's skill level might be one worth taking for the Mets, so are still looking to add to their rotation, even after the blockbuster signing of Scherzer.

In the 132 innings that he did pitch, Rodon had a 2.37 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and a ridiculous 12.6 K/9 while going 13-5.

Two names to watch as the Mets will attempt to win both halves of the offseason in the National League once the lockout is lifted.
