Matt Harvey Used Cocaine, Considered Suicide While With Mets

The explosive trial into the death of former Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs has brought to light some serious troubles in the life of former New York Mets' pitcher Matt Harvey.

Harvey testified at the trial this week, and admitted to using cocaine while with the Mets. Harvey was asked by defense attorney Michael Molfetta if he had lied about using cocaine while in New York, to which Harvey said, “No one really asked.”

As noted by Mike Puma of The New York Post, Harvey's "tumultuous Mets tenure" included a being suspended for missing a game, several instances of reporting late to the ballpark, and "going AWOL from the Mets workout at Citi Field before the team traveled to Los Angeles for the NL Division Series in 2015.

"Harvey was so despondent at times," wrote Puma, "that he openly talked about killing himself, according to a source."

Harvey's teammate with the Angels in 2019, Skaggs, was found dead in a hotel room in July of that year, after choking on his own vomit. An autopsy revealed that the pitcher was under the influence of fentanyl, oxycodone and alcohol. Former Angels' employee Eric Kay is accused of supplying Skaggs with some of the drugs that may have led to his death.
