Jeremy Giambi Passes Away in Suspected Suicide

Another terrible tragedy for the baseball world, as former major leaguer Jeremy Giambi, the brother of former AL MVP Jason Giambi, has passed away at the age of 47. A report today says the death is a suspected suicide.

Jeremy Giambi played six years in the majors, including on the same Oakland A's team as his brother Jason, in 2000-01. He also spent time with the Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox. Jeremy never returned to the big leagues after his age-28 season in 2003.

He was found in his family home yesterday after an emergency call asking for medical assistance. He was deceased when responders arrived.

Giambi’s agent, Joel Wolfe, said his family has requested “that we all respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

His former teammate, A's pitcher Barry Zito, was devastated by the news.

"I am completely shocked by the news about Jeremy," he told the SF Chronicle. "He was an incredibly loving human being with a very soft heart and it was evident to us as his teammates that he had some deeper battles going on.

"I hope this can be a wake-up call for people out there to not go at it alone and for families and friends to trust their intuition when they feel somebody needs help."

The Oakland A's also issued a team statement.

"We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of a member of our Green and Gold family, Jeremy Giambi. We offer our condolences to Jeanne, Jason, and his family and friends," wrote the A's.

RIP Jeremy Giambi.
