Detroit Tigers To Retire Legendary Player’s Number
The Detroit Tigers are a proud organization; they like to honor their own. Unfortunately, COVID-19 got in the way of a planned 2020 celebration to honor legendary second baseman Lou Whitaker by retiring his number.
Now, finally, in 2022 (if Rob Manfred doesn't get in the way), Whitaker will get his day at Comerica Park on Aug. 6th, when his No. 1 will be retired. In a video tribute to Whitaker posted today, some of his former teammates, like Lance Parrish and Dan Petry, spoke of their reaction to the news, and memories of Whitaker.

"It brings a smile to my face," said Parrish, while Petry added "When I look up there and I see that No. 1, I can sit there and say, 'I played with that guy, I played with greatness.'"
Whitaker's number will be the 11th retired in the history of the Detroit Tigers franchise. He joins an impressive list, the first of which was Ty Cobb (who actually had no number), and includes names like Hank Greenberg, Al Kaline and Jack Morris. The most recent to be honored was his keystone teammate, Hall of Famer Alan Trammel. Trammel and Whitaker together again. "As it should be," said Trammel, who made the announcement today.
Sweet Lou played 19 years for the Tigers, the only team he ever knew. He retired in 1995.
