Chicago Cubs Sign Catcher

The Chicago Cubs have signed catcher John Hicks to a minor league contract.

Hicks played 10 games with the Texas Rangers this season, where he had four home runs, seven RBIs, and a .258 batting average. Although the sample size was small, it's fair to say that he did do fairly well when he actually had the chance to play in the majors. This is likely why the Cubs have decided to give the 32-year-old this deal.

Hicks has a decent chunk of major league experience under his belt, too. In 264 career games between the Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, and Rangers, he has 32 home runs, 97 RBIs, and a .236 batting average. The potential to be an effective power hitter is there, so he certainly could be in the running to be one of Chicago's backup catchers.

It will be interesting to see if he ends up making the major league roster this campaign. If he doesn't, the Cubs will at least have added a bit more depth to their system.
