Miami Marlins Sign Infielder
The Miami Marlins signed infielder Erik Gonzalez to a minor-league deal back in November, but it has just now been announced.
Gonzalez spent the 2021 campaign as a depth player for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 71 games, he had two home runs, 21 RBIs, and a .232 batting average. It wasn't a dominant season for him, but his high degree of versatility always makes him a good player to have around.
Gonzalez plays shortstop, third base, and second base, so if he makes Miami's MLB roster, he will come in handy when injuries arise. Yet, during Spring Training, he will have to fight hard to land himself a spot on their team.
Gonzalez is no stranger to the major-league level, however. He has played in the league since 2016, but primarily as a depth player. In 336 games between Cleveland and the Pirates, he had 11 home runs, 74 RBIs, and a .245 batting average.
Overall this isn't a bad little move for the Marlins. If all goes well, he could be a solid utility man for them.
