Los Angeles Angels Add Pitcher
The Los Angeles Angels have signed pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon to a minor league contract.
Ponce de Leon spent the 2021 season with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 24 appearances, he sported a 1-1 record, 6.21 ERA, and 24 strikeouts. Due to his struggles, the 30-year-old found himself released by the Cardinals in September and was unable to get himself back up to the majors. Because of this, he was permitted to sign this minor league deal with the Angels during the lockout.
Ponce de Leon spent each of the last four seasons with the Cardinals. In 57 total appearances, he had a 3-8 record, 4.33 ERA, and 152 strikeouts. During his first two seasons with the team, he showed very solid promise. The 2018 campaign was particularly impressive, as although he had a 0-2 record in 11 appearances, he also had a solid 2.73 ERA. He will be looking to find his previous form in 2022 with the Angels.
Although Ponce de Leon signed a minor league deal with the Angels, he will surely be fighting for a spot in their major league team. He can be a starter and reliever, but it seems more likely that he would be in the bullpen if he makes the Angels' roster.
Alas, let's see how the 30-year-old does from here.
