MLB Rumors: Marlins Eyeing Mets Free Agent

The Miami Marlins had a goal of significantly upgrading their outfield going into the offseason, and before the lockout, they were able to make a free agent splash, signing Avisail Garcia to a 4 year, $53M contract. Rumors are now pointing to them going after New York Mets free agent Michael Conforto as well.

Before MLB shut things down on Dec. 1st, the Marlins are said to have had "discussions with Conforto’s camp, and he remains a possibility.”  This according to Joe Frisaro of Man On Second Baseball.

The Marlins are "committed to increasing payroll" to address their needs, says Frisaro, and they are known to covet another strong outfield piece.

The problem here, is the price that Conforto would likely be commanding on the open market (once it's open again). Mets reporter Tim Healey of Newsday feels Conforto could get a contract worth north of $80M.

"If the Marlins are willing to give out their biggest contract in who knows how long... then I could definitely see it."

However, as Frisaro writes, it's worth noting that Derek Jeter and Co. already turned down a 4-year, $78M request from a free agent they really coveted, center fielder Starling Marte.
