MLB Rumors: Anthony Rizzo Returning to the New York Yankees

According to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, the New York Yankees have held internal conversations about bringing back first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The team has been in contact with the free agent and have made it loud and clear they want him back.

Rizzo, who was brought over via trade with the Chicago Cubs was recently a guest on Ian Happ's podcast and had this to say about the potential reunion:

It was great. You go from playing at Wrigley Field and the Cubs to New York (and) Yankee Stadium. What more can you ask for?. We loved it. ... Got to basically live in the city for two or three months and enjoy New York City ... and then playing baseball for the Yankees, it was a good time. I really enjoyed it. It was fun getting the calls and hearing what teams had to say and why they want me and why I'm a good fit. But at the end of it, the right sort of deals didn't come to fruition at the deadline, and now you just sit and wait.

The Yankees have been active this offseason before the lock down of course, and this includes trade conversations they've had with the Oakland A's. The team remains interested in Matt Olson and it surely will be one or the other between Rizzo and Olson.

As for last season, the Yankees first basemen slashed .249/.340/.428 with eight HR and 21 RBI after the trade and quickly became a clubhouse favorite. Look for contract talks to continue once the lock out concludes and if Rizzo decides to walk, look for the Yankees to make a blockbuster trade. Shocker.
