Miami Marlins Trade Catcher To San Diego Padres
After acquiring catcher Jacob Stallings from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Miami Marlins have now traded catcher Jorge Alfaro to the San Diego Padres for cash considerations or a player to be named later.
The #Padres made the following roster moves:
— San Diego Padres (@Padres) December 1, 2021
-Acquired C Jorge Alfaro from the Miami Marlins for a PTBNL or cash
-Agreed to 1-year contracts with LHP Tim Hill and RHP's Austin Adams & Emilio Pagán
-Non-tendered RHP Trey Wingenter and LHP's Jose Castillo and Matt Strahm
With the addition of Stallings, it seemed inevitable that Alfaro would be moved. There simply wasn't a spot for him in Miami's lineup anymore and now he will be looking to make an impact with the Padres.
Alfaro is a very intriguing player. During the 2019 season, he showed solid power, as he had 18 home runs and 57 RBIs. Yet, he hasn't been able to replicate those totals since. This season with Miami, he had four home runs, 30 RBIs and a .244 batting average in 92 games. Perhaps the change of scenery can help the 28-year-old find his previous form.
This is a move for the Padres that comes with virtually no risk and could benefit them well. In 396 career games between the Philadelphia Phillies and Marlins, Alfaro has 40 home runs, 154 RBIs and a .258 batting average.
