All-Star Pitcher Staying Away From MLB
Last offseason, pitcher Masahiro Tanaka decided to return to Japan and sign a two-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. There was speculation that the 33-year-old would use his opt-out clause for this season to return the majors for the 2022 campaign. Yet, it has now been reported that Tanaka will be finish his contract with the Eagles.
If Tanaka did opt out, a reunion with the New York Yankees would have very likely followed. Keep in mind, during last offseason, he openly stated that he would only play for either the Yankees or head back to NPB. Perhaps if there wasn't a lockout, we could have seen the veteran pitcher return, but there is a lot of uncertainty heading into next season right now. Alas, maybe this avenue could be explored again in 2023.
In 23 games this season with the Golden Eagles, he had a 4-9 record, 3.01 ERA and 126 strikeouts. Although he sported a losing record, he clearly did his part to keep them competitive and pitched well.
Nonetheless, it's disappointing that we won't be seeing the two-time MLB All-Star back next season, but there still is hope for the future.
