Freddie Freeman Rejects Braves' First Offer
According to Bob Nightengale, first baseman Freddie Freeman has rejected the Atlanta Braves' first contract offer to him. The extension would have been a five-year, $135 million deal had he accepted. However, the 32-year-old is seeking a six-year, $200 million contract.
It is apparent that Freeman wants to stick around in Atlanta, so now isn't the time for fans to worry. It's just clear that the veteran won't be taking a discount to stay. When looking at how marvelously he's played for them, it is fair for him to seek his big payday. Furthermore, the Braves should be willing to give him it.
Freeman is also coming off of a fantastic campaign. In 159 games, he had 31 home runs, 83 RBIs and a .300 batting average. With that, he won his third Silver Slugger Award and made his fifth All-Star Game. Oh yeah, how could one forget that he also helped lead the Braves to their first World Series win since 1995?
In 1,565 games over 12 seasons with the Braves, Freeman has 271 home runs, 941 RBIs and a .295 batting average. Expect to see those totals go up next season with Freeman still wearing a Braves hat.
