Chicago Cubs Sign Veteran Catcher

The Chicago Cubs have signed catcher Yan Gomes to a two-year, $13 million contract. The contract also comes with a $6 million option for the 2024 campaign.

Gomes split the 2021 season between the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics. In 103 games, he had 14 home runs, 52 RBIs and a .252 batting average. Overall, it was another productive year for Gomes and due to this, he landed himself this nice contract with the Cubs.

Gomes not only plays catcher, but also is capable of playing first base if needed. If the DH rule comes to the National League, he of course could work there, too.

In 882 career games over 10 MLB seasons, Gomes has 117 home runs, 416 RBIs and a .247 batting average. With that, he was an All-Star (2018) and has both a Silver Slugger Award (2019) and World Series championship (2019) under his belt.

This signing does create a bit of uncertainty over Wilson Contreras' future with the Cubs, though. The catcher even seemed to allude to that with his tweet following the news. We'll have to see if he's moved or they keep both him and Gomes around.
