3 Teams Who Could Sign SP Steven Matz
Toronto Blue Jays lefty starter Steven Matz enjoyed himself a bounce back season in 2021, and it came at the perfect time considering it was a contract year. Matz was a stud for the Blue Jays and now hits the open market on Monday.
Matz went 14-7 last season with a 3.82 ERA. He struck out 144 in 152 innings and became one of the Blue Jays most reliable starters. Toronto has been very clear to Matz' reps that they are interested in a new contract and we'll be curious to see how talks continue into next week.
3 Teams Who Could Land Matz in Free-Agency
Toronto Blue Jays: Watch for the Jays to sign Matz first, just in case they miss out on Robbie Ray. Ray is in line for a much higher pay day and lucrative contract so it's going to take longer to facilitate. Toronto needs to make an early move to take care of business and show their fan base they are committed to winning. Start it off by bringing back Matz.
Texas Rangers: The Rangers love Matz and have had interest in trading for him in the past when he was a member of the New York Mets. Now they have opened up their wallets and will be in contact with Matz' reps next week. You can't blame Matz for following the money considering he is 30 years old.
New York Yankees: Matz spent six seasons in New York and the Yankees know all about his stuff. He's a Stony Brook, New York native and there's a very good chance he goes back home. While a reunion with the Mets is extremely unlikely at this point, signing in the Bronx could very well happen. The Yankees will take care of their hole at shortstop first and then look for them to move their attention to their rotation.
