"Oh, Lord!": Kike Hernandez Making Playoff History

The Boston Red Sox have found their own Mr. October. Kike Hernandez has been the hottest hitter on any team in the postseason, and even before his Game 2 continued outburst, established a series of all-time baseball playoff records.

With 11 hits in four games after Game 1, along with 3 HR and 7 RBI, nobody has ever put up that combination of numbers in a 4-game span.

His 29 total bases in those four games has been surpassed only by the original Mr. October, Reggie Jackson. And according to ESPN Stats & Info., there are a number of other records Hernandez now holds:

  • All-time high three career playoff games with 10+ total bases
  • First leadoff hitter with 2 HR and 4 hits in a single playoff game (set in Game 1 of ALCS)
  • Tied with three others as the only players to have multiple 4+ hit games in a single postseason
But wait, let's update that:
Kike extended his records in Game 2 of the ALCS, now with 15 hits, 9 for extra bases, in a 5-game span, both all-time bests.

He even provided one of the best in-game manager interview moments ever, banging one of his two blasts on Friday night while Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker was talking to the broadcast team:
Oh, and don't forget about his defense, which has also been off the charts.

After yet another home run in Game 2, and two hits, he boosted his average to .516 in the postseason.
