3 Possible Destinations For Anthony Rizzo
It's rather apparent that this year's MLB free agency class is very deep. Another popular name who will be looking for a new contract is first baseman Anthony Rizzo. In 141 games between the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees this season, he had 22 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .248 batting average. It wasn't the best campaign of his career, but even with that, he should receive plenty of interest from around the league. Keep in mind, he's a three-time All-Star who comes with a lot of pop.
Here are three possible destinations for him.
New York Yankees: Rizzo openly stated that he would love to return to the Yankees, so it's fair to state that they are the frontrunners. If Rizzo has it his way, he will be in the Bronx next spring. He became well-liked in the clubhouse because of not only his strong play, but also his solid leadership. Although he struggled at times after the trade, he did leave a good enough impression where the Yankees could elect to re-sign him. The ball truly seems to be in their court at this point.
San Diego Padres: It isn't a secret that the Padres are looking to upgrade at first base. Eric Hosmer has been in the rumor mill for quite some time as well. We recently reported that the Padres are expected to be big players in the Anthony Rizzo sweepstakes this off-season. Rizzo also has experience with the franchise, as he played his rookie season there. Trading him so early on in his career is a move San Diego still regrets, so why not try to make up for it now?
Atlanta Braves: For the Braves to pursue Rizzo, everything would need to go wrong with their negotiations with Freddie Freeman. Ideally, both parties clearly want to get something done, as Freeman has spent his whole career there and has been absolutely fantastic. He also has led them to a World Series appearance this season. However, if the worst case scenario does occur, Rizzo would be someone they would have to consider. There aren't too many more notable first basemen on the market.
