Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Sets Records While Joining Exclusive Grand Slam Club

After losing a series to the Baltimore Orioles the last time they met, the Toronto Blue Jays showed no mercy this weekend, demolishing the O's with 44 runs in winning three straight, and they were led, as they have been so often of late, by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.:

Gurriel sets a Blue Jays team record with his 4th grand slam of the season, and there are only seven players in the long history of baseball that have hit more sacks-drunk bombs in a single season (led by Don Mattingly, 1987, and Travis Hafner, 2006, who each hit six slams in a season).

The Jays' left fielder is now tied with 18 others, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, for 8th place on the all-time list. And Gurriel has a couple of weeks left to try to add to his total.

Gurriel's slam came in the 1st inning of the Jays' 22-7 destruction of the Orioles in Camden Yards on Sunday, and he later added another 2-run shot, and finished the game with 7 RBIs. He also had three walks and five runs, becoming the first player in major league history (since RBIs became an official statistic in 1920) to put together a 7 RBI, 5 Run, 3 BB stat line in a game.

In his last 30 games, Gurriel is batting .367, with 34 RBIs and a 1.115 OPS.
