Angels Waive Shortstop in Surprising Roster Move
The Los Angeles Angels are out of playoff contention, and are undergoing a bit of a roster shuffle. Today, they released shortstop Jose Iglesias—their starter for the entire season up until this week—to make room for some bullpen help.
The #Angels have released SS José Iglesias. It’s a little bit of a surprise but logical because they decided that Jack Mayfield would get the SS starts now. (More)

30-year-old Jack Mayfield has taken over as the Angels starter at SS this week, and presumably for the rest of the season.
Iglesias is a 10-year veteran of the big leagues, with a career batting average of .276. He hit .259 for the Angels this year after being acquired from the Baltimore Orioles last offseason. In the shortened 2020 season, Iglesias batted a whopping .373 with a .956 OPS.
But Iglesias' calling card had always been his defense, a trait that's followed the 31-year-old shortstop throughout a decade in the Show. This season, however, his defensive metrics have cratered. His minus-21 runs saved below average is the worst mark in the majors for any player at any position.
His spot on the 40-man roster will be taken by RHP Janson Junk.
