Yankees Suffer Third COVID Outbreak of Season: "We're Day-to-Day Right Now"

Just a day after New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole tested positive and was placed on the COVID-19 injured list, another starting pitcher, Jordan Montgomery, has  done the same. This latest outbreak follows the Yankees' trip to Florida to play the Miami Marlins. Florida is the nation's hotbed of surging coronavirus cases. Coincidence?

With two key starters going down at the same time, with the Yankees' battling to stay in the Wild Card race, it's nervous times for New Yorkers. Monday night, Cole missed his scheduled start, and his replacement, the newly-acquired Andrew Heaney, got clobbered on the way to a 7-1 loss to the lowly Baltimore Orioles.

Tuesday's starter is a rookie fresh up from the minors, Luis Gil. He had a 5.64 ERA at Triple-A.

Manager Aaron Boone spoke about the team's latest Covid outbreak.

"We're truly day-by-day right now, hour-by-hour." Yikes.

This is the Yankees' third Covid outbreak of the season; in May, eight members of the team tested positive, then last month, during/right after the All-Star Break, another six players went down.
