Red Sox Admit They're Rushing Kyle Schwarber Back

The Boston Red Sox are scuffling. After dropping two of three to the Tampa Bay Rays, and three of four to the Toronto Blue Jays, the BoSox are barely clinging to a 2-game lead over the New York Yankees in the Wild Card race, with the Blue Jays just 2.5 back.

They're desperate for a spark, so they're bringing slugger Kyle Schwarber off the IL and inserting him into Friday night's lineup for the first time, even though they admit he might not be totally ready.

The Red Sox acquired Schwarber from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline on July 30th, but he has yet to suit up for them, while recovering from hamstring and groin injuries that have kept him out for the last six weeks.

So why are they rushing him back, while treating their long-time recovering pitching ace Chris Sale with kid gloves?

Ah yes, it all comes down to money and contract status. Sale is signed for 3 more years, admitted manager Alex Cora, while Schwarber is simply a rental until the end of this season. So essentially, what Cora is saying, is that what happens to Schwarber physically, isn't really their problem going forward. Interesting way to do business.

Schwarber was on a home run tear for the ages back in June before his groin injury, and his kind of power will be a welcome addition to the Boston lineup. But just how healthy he is and how much he'll be able to contribute remains to be seen.
