Done Deal: Blue Jays and Reds Make a Trade
The Toronto Blue Jays have found some outfield insurance as the team has struck a deal with the Cincinnati Reds to land Mallex Smith. Cash considerations is the asset being shipped back to the Reds in this deal.
Smith lands in Toronto after playing most of the season in the minor leagues. He did not have to go through the waivers process to be eligible for a deal. He heads to the Blue Jays as the team recently lost center fielder George Springer to an ankle injury and need another body to help fill the depth chart.
So far in AAA this season, Smith has slashed .231/.296/.292, however possesses game-changing speed and this is certainly an area the Blue Jays have lacked most of the year. In 2019 Smith led the Majors with 46 stolen bases.
Look for Smith to potentially get a look should there be another injury this week to the Blue Jays, but what's more likely to take place is having him called up when the rosters expand in September so he can bring some speed to boost the bench.
