The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals Strike a Deal
The Kansas City Royals have made their second trade of the day. Third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez is heading to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash. The trade does not come as too much of a shock, as Gutierrez was recently designated for assignment by the Royals. In 38 games with the big league club, he had a .215 batting average and hit one home run.
Gutierrez will be joining the Orioles' AAA team, the Norfolk Tides. Although is starting his Orioles tenure in the minors, he does have a real chance of being called up to the team. Much like the Royals, the Orioles are not taking the MLB by storm this season. They currently are sporting a 27-55 record, which certainly means they are not making the postseason.
If Gutierrez can impress in the minors, he should get a chance to play in Baltimore soon. Given the fact that he is just 26-years-old, there is still room for growth. The Orioles also do not have a particularly strong depth chart, so eventually becoming a depth piece there shouldn't be too complicated for him.
This is a low-risk move for the Orioles, so it is hard to complain about it. The Royals also are getting some extra money from trading him, which is always a nice thing to have.
