Source: Yankees in Discussions on Trevor Story—But Maybe Not for SS

With Nelson Cruz dealt, Trevor Story is one of the biggest bats available at the trade deadline, and according to reports, at least 6 teams have been in touch with the Colorado Rockies about their star shortstop, including the New York Yankees.

The Yankees, of course, have a shortstop, although Gleyber Torres has been a huge disappointment this season, with a .666 OPS and only 6 home runs. Acquiring Story would mean some serious lineup shuffling.

They could move Torres over to 2B, and keep DJ LeMahieu at 1B. But where that leaves Luke Voit when he returns from injury is anybody's guess.

According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand"at least one team" has called the Rockies, interested in Story "with the idea of playing him in center field."

The Yankees center field position is 24th in baseball with a -0.8 Wins Above Average this season. Connecting the dots, this could mean the Yankees are the team looking at Story for CF.

Story has never played the outfield in the majors or even the minor leagues.

Another option would be for Giancarlo Stanton to play outfield, and Voit to DH

Either way, the Rockies aren't just giving him away. Colorado interim G.M Bill Schmidt told Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post "we don't have to move players for financial reasons. It's about what we can get back. We are not a farm system for other people."

One week until deadline day.
