Major League History For Marlins Pitcher

Pablo Lopez is really making a name for himself in the baseball history books this month. On July 2nd, he tied a major league record by being ejected after just one pitch, when he hit Ronald Acuna Jr. to start a game. Now, Lopez has set a new all-time MLB record, this time in a good way:

A pitcher has never before struck out the first nine batters of a game. Until now.

The previous record of 8 consecutive punch-outs to start a game was accomplished three times, the most recent by German Marquez in 2018.

Lopez also tied the Marlins record for most consecutive strikeouts at any point in a game, set originally by Ricky Nolasco in 2009.

Lopez is having a breakthrough season for Miami, with a 3.03 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, and a 111:25 K:BB ratio.
