In-Fighting On The Cubs — Contreras Blasts Teammates!

The situation on the Chicago Cubs is going from bad to worse. In the middle of a 2-13 stretch, and about half a dozen players ready to be dealt, catcher Willson Contreras has blasted his teammates' lack of effort.

Asked after their latest loss if he thought the effort was there by his teammates, Contreras replied bluntly, "No. I don't.... This is a team effort. I can't take control (myself).... That's on everybody's work ethic."

Contreras didn't stop there. He basically threw everybody under the bus, except his best bud on the team. "I cannot ask everybody to play like (Javier) Baez and I play.... I'm here to win, I'm here to compete, and that's what I'd like to have from everybody else."

Contreras' argument might have been more convincing if he hadn't exonerated his friend, second baseman Baez, whose effort hasn't been exactly exemplary this season either. Like the time he forgot how many outs there were, and ran the Cubs out of an inning:

The Cubs' catcher summed up his feelings by saying, “There’s a lot going on. There's a lot of things I'd like to say but I'd rather keep it to myself than say it.” Hmm.. Sounds like he DID say it, didn't he?

Safe to say, the trade deadline can't come fast enough for the Chicago Cubs.
